How to thoroughly clean your washing machine? 3 foolproof tricks to get rid of musty smells

Using a washing machine is essential in our daily lives. If you forget to maintain it, unpleasant odors will build up and affect its operation.

Why does the washing machine smell bad?

Most people think that the washing machine cleans itself when exposed to liquid soap, water or fabric softener. On the other hand, after each wash cycle, it releases dirt, dead cells or dust, which causes an unpleasant musty smell.

According to a study published by the National Institutes of Health, washing machines accumulate germs because their high humidity level creates the perfect conditions for the proliferation of bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus or Staphylococcus epidermidis, which cause different types of infections, for example, skin infections, pneumonia, endocarditis or even toxic shock syndrome.

This type of bacteria reproduces during washing cycles up to 50°C.

Here are 3 foolproof tips to keep your clothes clean without using abrasive products.

Wash without clothes at 40 or 60°C at least once a month:

Add three glasses of white vinegar and run a short wash cycle, this ingredient will help remove dirt, bacteria, soap scum and   bad odor  .

Clean the detergent drawer of the washing machine

Take it out and submerge it in a bucket full of water, add ½ glass of hydrogen peroxide, four teaspoons of baking soda and the juice of two lemons. Leave to soak overnight.

The next day, with the help of a brush, remove the dirt, dry it and put it back in its place.

Clean the rubber of the washing machine

You will need: 50 ml of white vinegar, 250 ml of water and the juice of a lemon

All you have to do is mix the ingredients well, then dampen a   microfiber cloth  , wipe all the rubber inside and out, and wash the cloth when it’s dirty.

Then leave the washing machine door open for an hour.

Avoid closing the washing machine after each wash cycle because if you don’t air it out, it will smell bad.

Apply these tips and you will notice that your clothes will smell good.

After the cycle is complete, add ½ cup   baking soda  , start a new wash cycle, then let it air dry for 45 minutes to dry completely.

Repeat this trick at least once a month!
