Geraniums are among the most popular and sought-after plants. If they are cared for properly, they give us beautiful and very colorful flowers. You’ve probably seen balconies full of geraniums in bloom, perhaps wondering why your geranium plant doesn’t bloom the same way.

One of the most common reasons geraniums stop blooming is their exposure to very cold, frosty, or windy temperatures. Geraniums should be protected by placing them indoors during colder days. But this isn’t the only trigger for geraniums not blooming: we’ve listed a few tricks below.

Put them in an area with light.

These beautiful plants can’t bloom unless they have the right amount of natural light, i.e., sunlight. The artificial light in the house is not intense enough to stimulate the growth of geraniums. But be careful: don’t place geraniums in direct sunlight if they are in a shady environment, they could undergo drastic changes and die.

That said, it’s important to know that geraniums can also bloom in low light (not full shade), so don’t be discouraged if you live in an apartment that isn’t adequately exposed to the sun’s rays.

Give the plant adequate space to grow.

When we buy a geranium plant and bring it home, we should assume that it has been in the same pot for a long time. Precisely for this reason, the plant should be transplanted into a larger pot, to give the roots adequate space and the possibility of obtaining nutrients from a larger amount of soil.

As they grow, the plants need to be transplanted into larger pots, otherwise the plant will not bloom or even die.

Fertiliza tus geranios

Si tus geranios se plantan en macetas, se recomienda abonarlos en primavera y verano. Una vez que hayan alcanzado su tamaño máximo (los geranios son plantas relativamente pequeñas), ya no será necesario trasplantarlos y es precisamente por ello que necesitan fertilización, que puede ser:

• abono orgánico : puedes elegir cualquiera de compost, humus, guano, estiércol, cáscaras de huevo o plátano. Un puñado es suficiente para cada planta;
• Fertilizantes químicos : para hacer florecer tus geranios puedes optar por fertilizantes producidos específicamente para este tipo de plantas.

Regar solo cuando realmente se necesita

Puede parecer un consejo genérico, pero dar la cantidad adecuada de agua a la planta de geranio es fundamental para su floración. Controlar la frecuencia de riego no es fácil: hay muchos factores a tener en cuenta, como el clima de la zona en la que vives, el tipo de suelo o el tamaño de la maceta.

A los geranios no les gusta un suelo completamente seco, pero al mismo tiempo uno excesivamente húmedo podría dañarlos de forma permanente. La capa superior del suelo se seca rápidamente, mientras que la más cercana a las raíces permanece húmeda durante más tiempo.

Por eso es importante comprobar la humedad del suelo y esto se puede hacer introduciendo una estaca de madera en él.

Pruning Geraniums

An excellent trick to maintain the health of geraniums is to prune them at the end of winter, to encourage the growth of more stems and, consequently, more flowers.
