Do you love Sansevieria  to such an extent that you want to have more than one plant at home? You can do this without necessarily having to go to the store!

This plant, also popularly known as  Mother-in-law’s Tongue  or  Snake Plant , is a  very popular and widespread succulent  as a houseplant.

Its  tall, stiff leaves  are its distinctive feature that make it truly unmistakable. But did you know that  you can multiply it with a single leaf until you get many different seedlings? We explain how to do it step by step so you don’t make a mistake!

Choose a sheet

The first thing you need to do is  examine  your  sansevieria  and  choose a leaf  to remove from the main plant.

The choice must fall on a healthy and mature leaf : it must therefore be a leaf that is not too small and that  does not have spots  or signs of disease or infection.

At this point, gently remove it  from the soil , separating its roots from those of the main plant without damaging it.

Using garden shears or shears, cut the sansevieria leaf into  sections of 5-7 cm  each until you obtain  rectangles  of the original leaf.

Let the roots develop

Let the cut heal slightly by keeping the leaf parts  in the open air for a few hours .

Now all you have to do is make the individual leaf rectangles sprout roots . You can do it in two different ways.

In the field

The classic method consists of rooting the leaf in a very soft soil , made with a mixture of sand and peat , burying the lower part of the leaf in the direction of the cut (that is, putting the part of the leaf that was actually in the bottom when you cut it).

After placing it in a small pot with potting soil, place it in a warm (above 16-18°C) and fairly bright place .

Typically, it can take  a long time for the leaf to root, even  several months , and the process is not always successful. For this reason, we recommend that you bury the various rectangles of the original leaf  in several pots  so that you have  a better chance  of one of the leaves developing roots.

In water

Another method to root the Sansevieria leaf  is  in water .

Place the rectangles made with the Sansevieria leaf in a glass so that only the bottom is in contact with the water. The optimal situation is that the blade does not touch the bottom of the glass: for this you should use glasses or jars in which the bottom is narrower than the top.

Again, as before, you must follow the direction on the sheet .

Normally, the rooting time, in the water method, is  shorter  and often we are not talking about months but weeks. But we still recommend that you try several rectangles in different cups to increase the chances of the process being successful.

This method, also known as the glass method , can also be used with other plants, especially fats.

Bury in a vase

Whether it has taken root  in soil  or  in water , once this has been achieved,  what is now a true seedling must  be transplanted into a pot.

Choose a medium-sized pot, preferably clay, and bury the seedling in soil suitable for succulents . Next, care for your new sansevieria (or your new sansevierias, if you have more than one!) as  you did the mother plant .

Keep it, therefore, in a  sufficiently warm place  and where  there is no direct sunlight  that,  with the heat , can  burn  its leaves.
