Seeing our plants bloom is one of the greatest successes of any gardener, expert or inexperienced. Flowers are often the reason we buy our plants. However, sometimes we fail to make them bloom.
Not all plants flower, but it is true that many do not because they do not find their ideal conditions of light, irrigation, temperature and many other factors that can affect their flowering.
For example, plants such as sansevieria, stem of happiness or monstera delicious are associated with beautiful leaves but few know that they can also flower.
Why aren’t my plants flowering?
There are many factors that can affect plants not flowering, but first you must identify the type of plant and know its ideal conditions, then know its age.
Plants do not flower until they reach a certain level of maturity. Some may take years to produce their first flowers, so it is important to know each species.
The main factors that affect the flowering of plants are:
- Lack of light . Each plant has specific needs regarding light. If you keep a plant that needs a lot of light in the shade, it obviously won’t bloom. The same is true in reverse.
- Temperature _ Excessive cold can kill a plant’s buds or make flowers last very short. To do this you have to make sure you choose the right ones depending on where you live.
- irrigation _ A dry plant will never have the energy it needs to flourish. On the contrary, a plant that receives too much water may die or become covered in fungus, so it will not flower.
- Lack of nutrients . Like any other living being, plants also need adequate nutrients and when they are lacking, plants stop growing, do not flower or rot. An excess of nutrients can also be harmful.
- Insects or diseases . Insects weaken our plants, robbing them of the energy to flourish. It is important to keep mealybugs or ants away from our plants that can literally colonize it.
How to prepare a fertilizer that activates flowering
The lack of nutrients is one of the reasons why our plant does not flower. Nutrients such as phosphorus and potassium are important to stimulate flowering: this is where fertilizers come into play, substances that provide nutrients that plants can assimilate.
To help plants bloom faster and more abundantly you need two ingredients: 50 grams of fresh ginger and half a cinnamon stick .
Cut the ginger into small pieces and grind it together with the cinnamon. You can do it in a blender or food processor.
Once you have obtained a moist and homogeneous mixture, put it in a glass jar with a lid and store it in the refrigerator.
To make the fertilizer, mix half a teaspoon of the ginger-cinnamon mixture with a quart of water. Let it sit for a couple of hours and then use the solution to water non-blooming plants.
Fresh ginger, in small quantities, is an excellent ally for plants. This root is a great source of potassium, a vital nutrient for flowering, and its aroma will keep insects away.
Cinnamon can stimulate root growth and is very useful against plant fungi, which are often the cause of lack of flowering.
