What is baking soda?

Baking soda is a product in the form of a white powder that can be found in all supermarket-type stores at a low cost. It can be called in several ways: baking soda, monosodium carbonate, Vichy salt or even sodium acid.  

You will find baking soda on the market that will be used for all uses: household cleaner, body hygiene, etc.

Pharmacies sell pharmaceutical baking soda intended for medical use but which can also be used for multipurpose use for your interior or exterior.

How to use it for weeding?

To overcome the tall grass and weeds that litter your garden, baking soda will be your green ally! In addition to being  biodegradable, 100% natural, economical and harmless,  it will be of unparalleled effectiveness!

Baking soda can be used to kill weeds that crawl between the flagstones of your deck, those growing under the gravel, or the clumps of grass peeking out of the corners of your walls at foot height. Alone, you won’t be able to weed the entire lawn! Be careful not to apply it to your flower beds because the product could destroy them!

To use baking soda well, simply  sprinkle the powder directly  where you want it to act. Gardeners advise using baking soda once or twice a year and dosing the following amount:  20g/m2 of water .

When to use baking soda?

It is recommended to use this natural herbicide  on a day with dry weather and moist soil . It is best to wait for the sun to return after 2 or 3 days of light to moderate rain. It is thanks to this moisture that the baking soda will dissolve and make the weeds disappear. On the other hand, if the soil is too soggy, the baking soda may leach and therefore be ineffective.

Baking soda in the garden: other uses

If you cultivate your land and have an organic garden, keep in mind that baking soda is a  excellent way to protect your crops  !

Since January 2019, sodium bicarbonate is  authorized in organic crops in Europe . This limits the use of pesticides and other chemicals that are dangerous to health and the environment.

As a preventative measure, baking soda helps protect plants from fungal diseases such as downy mildew, powdery mildew or rust.

Here’s how to use baking soda in your garden.

• Dilute a teaspoon of baking soda in a liter of water.
• Add a teaspoon of black soap or Marseille soap.
• Spray the mixture, using a spray gun, on your plantings.
• Repeat the experience once a week for two months after each rain.

Baking soda can also protect your plants from bugs! The product appears to be effective against aphids.

The preparation

• Mix 1 teaspoon of baking soda with 3 tablespoons of olive oil.
• With the resulting mixture, dilute 6 teaspoons in a liter of water.
• Spray the product on plants outside of the flowering period, or just aim at the feet.
• Repeat the operation approximately every month.
