If you wear glasses every day, you probably know how frustrating scratches on your lenses can be. Although there are specialized products to eliminate them, they can often be expensive or difficult to obtain.
However, thanks to a conversation with the owner of an optical store, I discovered an effective and no-cost at-home method to reduce and even eliminate those annoying scratches. With ingredients that you probably already have at home, you can give your lenses a much clearer appearance without visible marks.
How to Remove Scratches from Eyeglasses
This at-home method is a great emergency solution to keep your glasses in good shape without spending money on expensive products. Put it to the test and enjoy a much clearer vision!
What will you need?
- A little toothpaste (preferably without gel or microgranules)
- 1 tablespoon mild liquid detergent
- 1 cotton swab
- Warm water (as needed)
Procedure
- Clean your glasses thoroughly: Before you start scratch removal, wash your lenses with warm water and a little liquid detergent. Dry them with a microfiber cloth to avoid leaving additional residue or marks.
- Apply the toothpaste: Using a cotton swab, place a small amount of toothpaste on the scratched area. Make sure it’s a white toothpaste with no abrasive granules to avoid damaging the glass.
- Rub gently: Using circular motions and without exerting too much pressure, massage the toothpaste onto the scratch for about 30 seconds to 1 minute.
- Rinse with warm water: Once the time has elapsed, rinse the lenses thoroughly with warm water to remove all toothpaste residue.
- Dry with a microfiber cloth: Finally, use a clean, dry microfiber cloth to make sure there are no traces of moisture or residue on the surface of the lenses.
Why does this method work?
Toothpaste has mildly abrasive properties that help smooth the surface of the lens, concealing scratches without damaging the material. This trick is inexpensive and effective for superficial scratches, although it won’t work on deep scratches or on lenses with special coatings.
