- A traditional plug (new or recycled)
- Coaxial cable (preferably recycled)
- Friction tape
- Screwdriver
- Cutter or scissors
- Small Screws & Nuts
- Ruler or tape measure
- Optional: F-type coaxial connector for better reception
- Post or support (can be a pipe, window, or pedestal)
Step by step: how to build your homemade antenna with a plug
- Preparing the plug
Take a traditional plug and remove the protective cap. Inside, we will make the main connection for the antenna. Make sure it’s clean and in good condition. - Connecting the coaxial
cable Use a coaxial cable with a connector, if you have one. Thread the end of the cord through the back of the plug and strip the ends: the center conductor should be separated from the mesh. Make sure you don’t mix them up. - Internal
fixing Fold the central conductor and secure it with one of the screws on the plug. Then, place the mesh on the opposite side, holding it in place with a screw as well. Use electrical tape to prevent both parties from making contact. - Antenna
construction Cut two lengths of coaxial cable of approximately 49 cm each. At one end of each wire, remove all of the outer wrapping, leaving only the center conductor. At the other end, remove just 1 cm of the guard without touching the inside. - Preparing the base
Flatten the ends with exposed mesh so that they can be secured with screws in the socket. Make a small hole in them to get the screws through and place a nut from the inside to secure them well. - Form the antenna into an inverted
Z Take each wire and bend it at a 90° angle outwards. Then, make another fold at the opposite end inwards, forming an inverted Z figure. This improves signal pickup. - Location and test
Connect the plug to the TV. Then, place the antenna in a high place: a window, a tube, or a pedestal. Ideally, it should be about 6 meters high or free of obstacles. Turn on your TV and look for the automatic channel tuning option.
Tips for a Better Signal
- Elevated location: The higher the antenna, the better the reception. Use a pipe, a wall near the window, or ceiling.
- Avoid obstacles: thick walls or metal structures can block the signal. Look for a clear place.
- Correct orientation: Try to rotate the antenna until you find the best direction to capture the channels.
- Use suitable connectors: if you have a type F coaxial connector, use it to avoid signal loss.
- Check the tuning: After connecting, don’t forget to look for channels in the TV menu.
