How to wash a large blanket or comforter
With this simple method, your blanket or duvet will be clean, fresh and like new without the need to use a washing machine or go to a dry cleaner. Try it and enjoy an impeccable blanket!
Materials Needed
To wash a large blanket or comforter you will need:
- Warm water (approximately 40°C)
- 6 tablespoons baking soda (to remove odors and stains)
- 2 tablespoons dish detergent or liquid detergent
- A mop or brush (optional, to facilitate the washing process)
Step-by-step procedure
1. Prepare the wash mixture
- Fill a bathtub with warm water (about 40°C).
- Add the baking soda and liquid detergent.
- Mix well until the ingredients are completely dissolved.
2. Soak the blanket or comforter
- Place the blanket or comforter in the bathtub.
- Make sure it is completely submerged in the water.
- Let it soak for 4 hours so that the detergent works and breaks down the dirt.
3. Knead and rub gently
- After soaking, gently press the blanket to remove any trapped dirt.
- If you have a mop or brush, you can use it to make the process easier and not strain your back.
- Do this process several times so that the detergent penetrates the fibers well.
4. Rinse thoroughly
- Empty the dirty water from the bathtub.
- Fill the bathtub with clean water and rinse the blanket several times until the water runs completely clear.
- You may need to change the water up to 4 times to remove all detergent residue.
5. Drain excess water
- Without lifting the blanket, gently squeeze it into the bathtub to remove excess water.
- Use a mop or stick to help you drain the water.
6. Dry properly
- Hang the blanket over a chair or clothesline to drain the remaining water.
- Leave it in a well-ventilated, shaded area to prevent the sun from discoloring the fibers.
- If there is too much weight left, place a towel underneath to absorb moisture.
Tips & Advice
- Don’t use hot water: Hot water can shrink the fibers or damage the colors of the blanket.
- Avoid direct sun drying: Direct sun can harden the fibers and discolor the fabric.
- Use a mild soap: Avoid harsh detergents to protect delicate fibers.
- Don’t twist the blanket: Squeeze gently to avoid deforming the fibers.
- Regular cleaning: If you use the blanket or comforter frequently, clean it at least every 2 months to avoid dust and odor buildup.
