We are all used to sewing our own clothes, bags, textile accessories to make our home more cozy: pillows, bedspreads, covers and the like, we even dare to make our own slippers. So why not try turning a rubber flip-flop into another type of footwear?
At first glance, it may seem complicated, but in reality, anyone with sewing skills can pull it off. This type of footwear is comfortable to wear, has an elastic footprint and is ideal for walks. In addition, it feels light and practical.
Instructions for making slip-on shoes:
- Sole material:
- You can wear flip-flops, rubber sandals, or any soft, dense material that is easy to pierce with a needle. The most important thing is that it matches the size of your foot. In my case, I cut off the top of flip-flops.
- Material for the upper:
- I chose denim fabric or jeans for this section.
- Creating the Pattern:
- I used a sheet of paper and placed it under my foot, carefully tracing the front outline. This will serve as a pattern for the front of the shoe.
- For the back (the heel), I took a strip of paper, adjusted it to my foot, and lifted the insole to the level of the heel.
- Cutting the pieces:
- Each part of the shoe is cut with a double layer of fabric for added strength.
- Initial sewing:
- I sewed the pieces together, flipped them on the right side, and added decorative stitching.
- Testing and assembly:
- I did an initial test, pinned the front and back, and sewed them together on the sides. I placed this template over the sole to mark the connection areas.
- Settings:
- I trimmed off the excess fabric and reinforced the edges with overlock stitches.
- Preparation of the joint:
- I did a topstitch around the contour, which will be the area of junction between the sole and the upper. I pinned the denim part to the sole.
- Sole Seam:
- For this part, sturdy threads are needed, preferably silk. The first step is to make an initial loop, threading the thread through the sole and loop.
- Each stitch then moves 5mm to the side, securing the fabric to the sole with even stitches.
- Internal templates:
- I used a combination of felt and denim (jeans) to make the insoles.
Now I have a pair of unique and handmade shoes!
Additional tips:
- Practice: If this is your first time making a shoe, use inexpensive materials to practice before working with final materials.
- Decoration: Add decorative elements such as embroidery or patches to personalize your shoes.
- Suitable tools: Use an awl or punching tools to make it easier to work with the sole.
- Care: To extend the life of the shoes, apply a layer of waterproof protection to the denim.
Dare to give it a try and create your own unique footwear!
