One of the hardiest plants in existence: it is the sansevieria<\/strong>, better known as mother-in-law’s tongue<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It is a succulent plant<\/strong>, much loved as a houseplant<\/strong>. It needs very little care and usually lives for many years, giving our home a touch of elegance<\/strong> thanks to the elongated shape of its leaves<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But, no matter how hardy it is, this plant needs some precautions, especially in the hot months<\/strong>. These are simple actions, but necessary to keep<\/strong> our mother-in-law’s tongue green and healthy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Warning<\/strong>: If you have particular problems with this plant, always contact your trusted florist or gardener.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If sansevieria<\/strong> is traditionally considered a houseplant<\/strong>, it is also true that in summer it can be kept on the balcony<\/strong> or in the garden<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The mother-in-law’s tongue<\/strong>, in fact, in the cold months<\/strong> should be kept at a temperature not lower than 10 \u00b0C<\/strong>. In summer<\/strong>, it also tolerates very high temperatures<\/strong>, being able to stay outside without problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Watch out <\/strong>for summer storms<\/strong>, though : if it rains, bring this plant indoors or protect it. Too much water could kill it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In summer, high temperatures<\/strong> can weaken your plants<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Despite being a tropical plant<\/strong>, sansevieria<\/strong> needs more water in hot weather. Ideally, you should water it at least once a week<\/strong> or every two weeks<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The secret<\/strong> is to check the soil<\/strong>: when it seems too dry<\/strong>, it’s time to water<\/strong> your plants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n NB:<\/strong> Obviously, the more you keep the plant in a sunny,<\/strong> warm<\/strong> place , the more the soil will tend to dry out quickly.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n If you keep this plant outdoors<\/strong>, choose carefully where to place it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Although she loves light very much <\/strong>, the mother-in-law’s tongue<\/strong> does not tolerate direct sunlight for long <\/strong>. These, in fact, especially in the hottest months, can burn the leaves<\/strong> of this plant causing premature death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If you notice yellowish-brown <\/strong>spots on<\/strong> the leaves, the cause may be precisely excessive direct exposure<\/strong> to sunlight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The ideal is to place this plant in a sunny place<\/strong>, but where direct light does not reach more than a couple of hours a day<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The thick leaves<\/strong> of sansevieria<\/strong> are very resistant to attacks by insects<\/strong> and pests<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n However, when it is hot, it can happen that the plant is affected by some infestations<\/strong>, especially if it is kept near other plants in the garden<\/strong> or on the balcony<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It is not uncommon for the plant to be attacked by cochineal<\/strong>: a parasite similar to a small red spider that gives off a substance similar to a white powder (in fact, it is known as cochineal or cochineal).<\/p>\n\n\n\n In particular, in sansevieria<\/strong>, this parasite manifests itself with brown spots that appear on the undersides<\/strong> of the leaves<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Getting rid of it is not difficult. You can try white alcohol vinegar<\/strong>: dilute 150ml<\/strong> in a liter of water<\/strong> and sprinkle it on the leaves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Alternatively, pass it directly over the leaves with the help of a small brush<\/strong> or a cotton ball<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Mother-in-law’s tongue transplant should normally be performed in early spring<\/strong>, but not every year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Ideally, you should do this every 3 years<\/strong> when the roots<\/strong> usually start to “get squeezed” in the pot and the soil<\/strong> has already exhausted all the nutrients it had to offer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Choose a larger<\/strong> pot<\/strong> for this plant and transplant, being careful<\/strong> not to break the roots<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Actually, fertilization<\/strong> is not mandatory for this plant which, even without fertilizers<\/strong>, can easily survive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n However, if you want a sansevieria<\/strong> that will grow and keep its leaves healthy, you need to choose the right fertilizer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Nitrogen<\/strong> and potassium-based<\/strong> fertilizers<\/strong> are very suitable: often, for this plant, liquid fertilizers<\/strong> are chosen to mix with the water used for irrigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Many wonder, then, how often to fertilize. It depends on the type and indications of the individual fertilizers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Usually, in the summer period<\/strong>, it is necessary to pay every 3 weeks<\/strong>.
