Garlic needs cold weather for the bulb to divide into cloves and sometimes for cell division to occur. However, the best time to plant is in late fall or early winter, about 2 weeks before the first frost.

Here are the top 5 tips for growing garlic that you won’t want to miss:

1. PLANT GARLIC SEEDS

The germination percentage of domesticated garlic seeds is extremely low. In fact, there are sterile seeds of most varieties because, due to thousands of years of selection for various traits that affect fertility, almost all garlic is propagated from cloves.

2. PLANTING ACCORDING TO THE WINTER WEATHER

You have to start with solid globules and then divide them into individual cloves. Plant the largest and most useful carnations, one for each hole, with the root end facing down. If you expect a mild winter, an inch of depth will suffice; In regions with severe winters, plant them 2-4 inches deep. Warning: You’d better get seed garlic, as it’s called, from a nearby source, or it may take 2 to 3 years to acclimate to your environment.

3. PLANT HAZELNUTS IN GARLICKY BEDS FOR A NATURAL MULCH

Garlic development lends itself well to mulching. Here’s a quick case especially suitable for regions with harsher winters: sow oats in your garlic beds at the end of August or beginning of September. When it’s time to plant the garlic, make cuts in the oats to plant the cloves. Garlic plants will have no problem breaking through the oat cover. The oats should push back the bucket when it freezes and frame a satisfactory dead mulch. If you don’t, expect your garlic yields to be lower as the oats will retain some of the water and nutritional supplements that your garlic would otherwise use.

4. REMOVE THE ESCAPE TO MAINTAIN THE SIZE OF THE GARLIC

Most garlic plants will end up producing a woody flowering stem called a scape. You must cut or break it so that the plant does not waste vitality on it, since improving the scape will affect the span of the knob. When evacuating the escapes, be sure to do so on a sunny day so the wounds dry quickly. Also, don’t just throw turnips in the dunghill: if you pick them while they are still tender, they become incredible stir-fries or pestos. In commercial farms, they are sold for 1-3 dollars per kilo.

5. DON’T OVERREDUCE GARLIC PLANTS

One more thing: you should use a high-phosphorus compost, such as bat guano or fish meal, to encourage the development of your garlic. However, don’t over-prepare it or it will turn too green and the buds won’t be as big as you want.

Like onions, garlic is a cool weather crop.
