Why put lemon in orchids?

To make your plants bloom again, you are inclined to experiment with anything discovered in the networks, even unapproved ones. Attention! You have to look for some logic like why put lemon in orchids and what results to expect? Lemon juice is said to improve plant growth. To understand and decide it is necessary to know the needs of the plant and the particularities of citric acid. Advantage or disadvantage? Focus on this tricky option!

Why put lemon in orchids? What is citric acid used for?

Famously, citric acid is allowed in organic production, as it can acidify irrigation water. Furthermore, it is gentle and safe, but its effect is short-lived in hydroponics.

Today, well educated and mastering rudimentary knowledge of orchid care, I came across the words of an award-winning New Zealand orchid grower who said his plants looked greener and seemed to have more vigor from the inclusion of citric acid in the orchid nutritional program. I chose a dendrobium as a “guinea pig” and launched myself into the experiment.

First, it should be noted that store-bought lemon juice contains both citric acid and malic acid. Both are used by plants, but including one part malic acid to ten parts citric acid is the best option. What does an orchid prefer to “eat” and why put lemon in orchids?

This way you can adjust the pH of your nutrient solution to 5.8. From a horticultural point of view, popular fertilizers contain nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and trace elements (NPK), but it is important that the dry matter of the plants is made up of approximately 95% of carbonated products. While plants do a fantastic job of providing CO2 and fixing it into carbon products used for metabolism and growth, supplementing with “pre-made” complex carbon can dramatically improve growth. Why put baking soda in orchids? Sprayed or sprayed, it stimulates flowering, as does citric acid, which in particular is a beneficial source of carbon.

How do I make my orchid bloom again?

We have repeatedly written that being exemplary epiphytes, in their native environment, orchids produce citric acid and have a greater production from the natural endophytic fungus present in their tissues (such as Aspergillus niger).

Citric acid is an effective chelator (which has the property of forming a soluble and non-toxic compound (a chelate) of metals with a positive metal ion) but does not interact directly with NPK fertilizers or modify them, except that it helps to absorb nitrates forms of nitrogen, phosphorus, calcium. In this sense, no long-term pH changes occur in the soil because the plants absorb and use most of the citric acid.

This process helps orchids meet their respiratory needs and improve cellular energy. Finally, this explains why to put lemon in orchids.

Can orchids be enhanced with lemon juice?

Many data indicate that orchids and other plants directly exude and absorb various organic compounds such as organic acids, hormones and enzymes. By making many of these products themselves, plants can influence their environment.

One of the processes for which orchids use citric acid is to keep the pH of the roots stable by pumping out root exudates of organic acids, mainly citric acid.

If you are using a nitrate fertilizer, you want to have a low alkalinity (pH) in both the potting soil and the nutrient solution you use to water your plants. This is where you add lemon juice (citric acid) to adjust the pH of the water/nutrient solution to 5.8. This way we are trying to copy what the plant is trying to do naturally. By adding lemon juice, you will provide the plant with citric acid instead of using its own.

How to use lemon on orchids?

By mixing lemon juice with your nutrient solution, you will adjust the pH to 5.8. Use indicator test strips to measure pH. They should be calibrated regularly, at least once a month and you can find them at any reputable hydroponics store. Mix enough solution for one application. It is not recommended to store the remaining solution for later use.

When feeding orchids, water the pots thoroughly, to the point where the water drains to the bottom. Your plant will also benefit from a foliar application of the solution, the leaves are able to absorb citric acid and some nutrients.

If you mist your plants, add lemon juice to the mist water. In case you dare not apply directly, pour water mixed with lemon juice into the saucer. The orchid will absorb it like mine did.

The expected result: vigorous, green leaves, abundant flowering, a lush orchid.

To make your plants bloom again, you are inclined to experiment with anything discovered in the networks, even unapproved ones.
