Sansevieria, also known by the scientific name of Sansevieria trifasciata<\/em> ,<\/strong>  is an easy plant to grow . It is also popularly known as tiger’s tongue, cow’s tongue, mother-in-law’s tongue, cat’s tongue, tiger’s tail and St. George’s sword. It is a very decorative and resistant plant.  Sansevieria resists very well at both high and low temperatures (up to -5\u00b0C)<\/strong> . In addition, it is a plant that helps clean the air inside the house.<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sansevieria or mother-in-law’s tongue gets its name from its leaves. <\/strong>This is due to the comparison of its long leaves with the long tongue (mockingly) that was attributed to the \u201cmost talkative mothers-in-law\u201d<\/strong>  for having spoken and criticized their respective genres.<\/p>\n\n\n

Sansevieria, also known as mother-in-law’s tongue, is one of the plants recommended by NASA<\/strong>  (National Aeronautics and Space Administration of the United States)  to remove toxic substances such as benzene, toluene, xylene and formaldehyde from the air we breathe<\/strong> .<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • Lightweight:<\/strong>  despite being very resistant,  it is ideal to place it in places with lots of light<\/strong> .<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Temperature:<\/strong>  the ideal is between 15 and 20 \u00baC<\/strong> , although in summer  can tolerate temperatures of 30\u00ba<\/strong> . Avoid drafts.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Water:<\/strong> if you want keep it vigorous<\/strong> , do not Water excessively and only when the soil is dry<\/strong> . In winter it only needs water once or twice a month, <\/strong> always depending on the temperature of the indoor environment. We must consider it as a succulent plant, so we must water it only when the substrate is dry<\/strong> . Excess water can cause rhizome rot<\/strong> (underground stem with several shoots that grow horizontally, from which roots and herbaceous shoots emerge from the nodes) . It does not like humid environments, so it is preferable to avoid spraying or misting water.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Transplant:<\/strong>  if the pot has become too small, the ideal is to move it to a larger one<\/strong> when spring begins, between March and April. To ensure good drainage, it is advisable to place some pieces of terracotta or pebbles at the bottom of the pot to prevent the substrate from being completely soaked with water. If it is not transplanted, it is advisable to renew the upper substrate: remove 3 cm of surface substrate and add new soil.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Compost:<\/strong>  Apply compost when temperatures begin to rise<\/strong> steadily (late spring and early summer) and do it once a month until temperatures start to drop again (fall).<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Pruning:<\/strong> Sansevieria does not require pruning<\/strong> , but it is recommended remove dry leaves<\/strong> to avoid diseases.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Flowering:<\/strong>  This tropical plant does not usually bloom indoors, but if it does, small flowers will appear in late summer.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Additional care for sansevieria:<\/strong>  Try not to touch the tips of the leaves, as they are sensitive and can be easily damaged.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
